I was really happy to be asked to cover the Nova FC USL-W game the week of June 16th. All week the weather had been crazy… storms, wind, rain, heat, sun… when I arrived at Segra Field in Leesburg, Virginia you could see the storm to the north. It was quite a site seeing it move across the sky. Thankfully, it was sunny at the field. Welp… the sky all of a sudden opened up and there was an immediate downpour. Thankfully, I brought my rain gear and could duck under the bench cover while the women warmed up. But they got drenched! And then, as soon as it started, it ended. The clouds were quite exciting and as is my style, I tried to incorporate them when possible. I think capturing dramatic skies in sports is part of telling the story.
This was my first time capturing an event at Segra Field. The USL-W league is a pre-professional league and I was excited to test my skills at a faster paced game. It was also neat to see that one of my son’s former goalie coaches was the coach of the team. That helped me feel more at ease as I was a little nervous. The field is quite a bit larger than a high school field and I do not have a large telephoto lens. It has never stopped me before and I wasn’t about to let it affect me that day either. I made my way around the field following the action.
The ladies played so good! The pace was fast and they really commanded the game. At the end, I was thanked for coming which is always appreciated. It is one thing to be hired to cover a game but when you’re volunteering your time and not getting paid, being thanked is really important. And the smiling faces were really nice to see.
As always, I love covering women’s sports. And we know that women’s football is increasing its share of the sports world at a very rapid pace. It also showed me that I can cover an athletic event at the next level and gave me confidence that I’m doing the right thing by pushing my sports coverage. If your club or team does not have a photographer, reach out to me. I am available for hire and you’ll receive really dynamic images that tell the story of your game.
