I had to wait a couple of weeks before I could write this post. Virginia Vitesse lost a heartbreak of a game down in Richmond in the first round of playoffs. While the game was up and down, the women all played with intensity and heart. Even though I am not on the court, I was a bundle of nerves and sometimes got caught up in the game. I think that is normal when covering a team and being an integral part of the season.
The next day I woke up wondering, “What’s next?”. Without a full time job, the basketball season kept me very busy. I was always editing, attending a practice or event, or covering a game. I made t-shirts. I did media day. I covered the two community introduction events. I felt a sense of importance and purpose. I know that it took a while for the players to warm up to me. I just kept showing up and being my authentic self. In the end, I made some wonderful connections. I am sure that for most, it is more on my end than theirs. I often feel that way in my life regardless. I put a lot of heart and soul into my photography and I truly believe the connection I feel to a player or a team is shown through my images.
As I write this, I just finished going through photos for other purposes. I can do better. Although I received numerous compliments on my photos and a glowing review from Ashley, the owner of the team (see below), I know I can improve. Positioning. Editing. Cropping. All of it can get better. I think I may look into a second lens. I really love my 70-200mm but I think a slightly wider lens that is really fast will possibly help. There were times when I had no space. I had to be creative with my compositions and sometimes it just didn’t work. I truly hope to be asked back next year so that I can improve and continue to be the leader in photography in the WABA.
Check out the review I received below. It inspired me and made me tear up because it was so beautiful to read. It is always nice to have your hard work noticed and appreciated. And just one more reason teams and organizations should hire me to cover their teams and sporting events.
Jennifer has been a gem of kindness and care since the day I met her! She serves as the official photographer for my semi professional women’s basketball team – Virginia Vitesse. Her level of detail, attention, and kindness makes her a joy to be around. She works exceptionally hard always & is unbelievably reliable. Regarding her photos, they’re exceptional. They are always such high quality, colors look great, and she captures your true self in such a beautiful way. Regarding the experience you will have with her? It’ll be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced in the most positive way! She makes everyone from the shyest person to the most outgoing person feel so comfortable and confident. Our players love and appreciate her, I love and appreciate her, and you will too! The best of the best in Loudoun County!
